“Let’s Just Laugh At That“. I took author Steve Backlund’s advice and laughed in the face of lies that had been holding me back for years. So simple, yet surprisingly effective.
If what we believe is not producing joy, peace, and hope, at some level, it’s a lie (contrary to God’s Spirit), so why pay attention to it? Same goes for things that are true but not Truth…
I tend to struggle with constant reminders of how I messed up. Replaying scenarios over and over in my mind, imagining what I should have done differently, or not done at all. Not a good feeling. And not one bit useful.
Now, instead of constantly slapping myself over failures, I learn from them, fix what needs fixing, surrender what I can’t fix, and move on. And laugh, as the Truth that God can work all things out for good flicks on the light and sends those dirty lies scurrying like cockroaches. Hahaha
I am freed as I trust that God can fix the things that I can’t. I use the remorse for pain I’ve caused or damage I’ve done as prayer ammo rather than wallow in human sorrow that is not only pointless but destructive (2 Corinthians 7:10).
I am also freed by the confidence that when I repent, God flings my offenses as far from His memory, ‘as the east is from the west‘ (Psalm 103:12). This blows my mind every time I think about it.
As if that weren’t awesome enough, it bears repeating: our astonishingly big-hearted Father works ALL things out for the good of those who love Him and live according to His purpose for us (Romans 8:28). He is so amazingly good! At EVERYTHING!
Pick a lie, a fear, or even a ‘truth’, and laugh it to scorn:
‘I don’t have what it takes’. Ha!
‘My past defines my future’. Hee Hee!
‘I have an incurable disease’. LOL
Some things may be true, but they aren’t TRUTH.
The TRUTH is:
God is Bigger
God is Stronger
YAHU!!! God is ABLE!
Try it:
Ha ha ha… aaahhh.
Would love to hear how laughing at lies works for you.
I love this post.
The lies were simply lies.
To laugh at them?
Brilliant!

I’m glad it resonates Deborah. Yes, it is brilliant. What an amazing way to overcome. God is so amazingly, brilliantly, outlandish!
A very perceptive post. Reading it what stands out for me are these lines.
“If what we believe is not producing joy, peace, and hope, it’s a lie, so why pay attention to it? This also works with things that are true but not Truth.”
The way I see it is not the white and black extremes of “Truth” and “Lies”. To me if what is manifesting is not the outcome that I seek then I need to review the core of my intentions. What manifests is not a lie. It remains true in situations where it may serve a purpose even though it is not what I want.
Ultimately it is a polarity of shades of grey that lie in between and we need to ascertain what aligns with us in the moment.
Cheers

Hi Shakti,
Very insightful point about our intentions affecting our perception of truth. Deception can be empowered by our intentions as well as by our ignorance, as our intentions/desires tend to filter our outlook.
It’s true that there are many shades of grey and, thankfully, every color 🙂 rather than all black and white truths or lies. However beliefs that hold us back and thoughts such as accusation, condemnation, self-hatred, and so on, are flat out lies, because they imprison us, whereas the Truth sets us free.
What I meant by thoughts which are not producing joy and peace being lies, was not the simplistic joy and peace that comes from gratifying our surface desires. I was referring to lies that steal that deep sense of well-being that comes from being grounded in the Truth and our true selves.
It’s so true that there are truths that we don’t like which serve a necessary purpose, and we must welcome them. This often comes in the form of discipline that produces character growth and spiritual development. As we become spiritually fit we will discern if our dislikes are truly things that are bad for us or actually medicine.
You mentioned being aligned in the moment. We must, as to make sure we are living in such a way that contributes to fulfilling the purpose for which we’ve been created, which is aligned with eternal Ultimate Truth.
Thanks for the feedback and insight.
Cheers,
Hannah
The hardest thing for me when I was younger was to surrender, live things to him right in his hands and let go, we feel that we are helping him buy trying to fix things, over thinking to make it better and the solution is much simpler. Very good post we should laugh often and learn from our mistakes.
Thanks Doris! I resonate with what you said about learning to surrender. I am thankful to be learning to rest inwardly and outwardly and to act out of faith rather than fear. As you said, it’s much simpler and infinitely more effective. Cheers to increased freedom 🙂

Hi Hannah
It really struck me when you said,
If what we believe is not producing
hope, peace, and joy, it’s a lie, so
why pay attention to it?
That is so true. At times I find myself believing in things and they are not even helping me. I loved this post because we are supposed to laugh at the lies we have been told. A lot of lies have been spoken over my life but this post reminded me that is all that they are, lies…….
Rolain.
Yeah! Psalm 2 says that God laughs at the plans of the enemy. He laughs at the absurdity of the enemy’s plan and that includes the absurdity of the lies spoken over you – you can bet that where the enemy has planted lies that the exact opposite is true, so haha 🙂 use them to your advantage and believe the very opposite because that’s who you really are, more than a conqueror.
That’s a good reminder. I don’t remember where I heard it, but I remember laughing at stuff that seemed impossible. It elevates you to a good place. I know years ago when I suffered from panic attacks, I would turn the fearful images in my mind into cartoon characters. The result: The panic stopped. I also remember a couple of years ago I was praying (more like sucking my thumb before the Lord). I whined, “What’s wrong with me, Lord?” I immediately heard Him say, “I don’t want to talk to you about that! I want to tell you what’s right with you!”
That’s amazing Gary! God is so good! Thanks for sharing and for the reminder of how God sees past our shortcomings to our true selves. May we see ourselves and others that way…
